3GP is a mobile phone video file format developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). It's a simplified version of the MP4 (MPEG-4) file format and was designed to decrease multimedia (audio/video) file size and bandwidth requirements in order to fit into mobile phones.

Two 3GP file extension are .3gp and .3g2 extension. .3gp (3GPP) file extension are usually for GSM Based Phones while the .3g2 (3GPP2) file extension are usually for CDMA2000 Based Phones. MP4 format has either .mp4 or .mp4a extension.
